What is coaching?
Simply put, coaching is a conversation at the service of the client. You bring a question, a topic that you would like to explore, and I support you in this process. You are the boss of your exploration, I accompany you and contribute with my skills and attitude.
More wisely, coaching is defined by the school I attended as “partnering in a co-creative process of enquiry in service to the potential which is seeking to emerge in the life of the client”.
Partnering is the core element from the beginning of our first conversation as a coach and coachee, and all the way to the end of the last conversation. However, it is a specific kind of partnership.
Developing on a metaphor by Claire Pedrick, as a coach, I am riding on the back of your tandem bike and you are in the front. I will contribute to balance and pedal power, whilst you take care of the steering and control the speed of the journey. I will balance keeping our conversation within the coaching container, holding the space for you, gently intervening if I feel we might be off course, often asking you “where are we”. I will give pedal power with my undivided attention, unconditional positive regard and my range of skills, asking you even more often “what might be there”.
What is somatic coaching?
It is a way of coaching that includes the body in a coaching conversation, not only the mind. Emotions, sensations, movement, imagination – all is welcome! Coaching with the whole body-mind, there is a lot more information, insight and wisdom that emerges.
Coaching conversations begin with meeting the person where they are. The whole of you meets with the whole of me. With unconditional positive regard and open questions, I will hold the space for you to explore the question that you brought to the conversation.
As we continue, I might invite some experiments to look at the question from different perspectives. Somatic practices foster mindfulness and creativity. In turn, fresh insights emerge. Some of the skills that I use in my coaching are Focusing, Constellation, Contact Statements, Environmental and Object Feedback, Verbal Experiments, Embodying, Looping, and many more.
In the concluding part of our conversation, I will partner with you to embody all the new insights and create ideas that will serve you in making the change you want to see in your life.
My approach
I hold our conversation with a holistic and active listening, keeping it grounded in the present and at the same time oriented to future possibilities. With all seriousness, I firmly believe in the power of joyfulness, humor and creativity, and I will support and nourish them when they occur. I also like to work with metaphors because they often hold the essence of the potential.
